i love a lot of things: my boyfriend, weird people, puppies, stray kittens, truffle oil, the nba, hot black men, crisp bills, and sad clowns. but my first love will always be books.
i started reading at a ridiculously young age. after a full day of patintero, taguan, and agawan base, my inner rebel chose to shine at night after my mom would tuck me into bed. i would rummage under my mattress, pull out my trusty flashlight, burrow under the covers, and stealthily read a nancy drew book. carolyn keene was my first idol, and nancy, bess, and george my first best friends. those were the first times i went rogue.
i often get asked the question “how do i become a dj?” and i always, always answer with “you have to read a lot.” and this isn’t just me trying to recruit members into my uncool cult of readers - it’s actually true. in living vicariously through my heroines of choice, i developed a personality that was resilient and hungry for information (thanks, nancy drew), with a deep bond with family and an unquenchable thirst for fun (credit to the sweet valley twins), takot sa mumu (rl stine & christopher pike), with a love for kids - hence my younger boyfriend (the babysitter’s club)… and the list just goes on and on and on.
musicians are often asked about their influences - people who helped shape the manifestation of their talent, which is music. i think the same can be said for me, as a dj. the people who helped shape my personality just happen to be fictional.
whatever it is you want to be - a doctor, a teacher, an astronaut, a fashion designer, a lawyer, and yes, even a dj - books will help you get to where you eventually want to be. and your choice of literature will lead you to where you belong.
books are the fucking bomb. and you should start reading TODAY. :)
who do you read? i love baldacci, cornwell, grisham, picoult, follet, and the occassional patterson. care to share?
